As believers we are supposed to be different then those who don't believe, right? But are we?
Do we talk a good game or do we play a good game? We say our desire is to become more and more like Jesus. But do we mean it?
Jesus was a friend to sinners, the poor, the sick, the criminal. How are we doing with that? Have we walled ourselves up in the Christian community so tight that we are protecting ourselves from the very ones that Jesus came to save? Let's face it, becoming like Jesus could get us dirty. It could infringe on our own time, our own wants. We might actually have to put ourselves aside to become like Jesus, to minister to those He came for. Didn't he also come for those in the church you might ask? Sure, and church is a good place to get cleaned up, to grow in our faith, to learn how to be community and how to be like Jesus. But leaving all that inside the Church defeats the whole purpose of becoming like Jesus. We become like Him to do the work of Him. His work took Him throughout the known world. It took him to seedy places. It took him to lepers, to ordinary people, to parties and to places some did not want to go. Why, because He was totally given over to His mission.
What about us? Are we totally given over to our mission? Or are we playing it safe?
Jesus was radical. Jesus, help me to be radical like you. Help me to get out of my safety zone. Help me to use all that I have and all that I am to be like you. And when I am not, give me a little shove in the right direction.I don't want to get to the end of my life and realize I talked a good game, but didn't play. Amen.
